More volunteering – Pretty Muddy Chicago

Here I go, volunteering again!

This weekend was another one filled with fun and a day of volunteering, the race this weekend was Pretty Muddy Chicago.  I signed up back in April or May to volunteer at this one after I was given a bit of a hard time for volunteering at Dirty Girl and not at Pretty Muddy, so I went online and filled out the volunteer info and added Pretty Muddy to my list.

Ready for all the participants!

Ready for all the participants!

There had been a few times over the past week that I rethought volunteering, the gig was almost 2 hours south outside Chicago and I wasn’t sure the drive was worth it, but when the opportunity to head to the city Friday afternoon came up I decided why not volunteer, I know how great I feel after a day of volunteering and I didn’t have other Saturday plans so why not.

Perfect day for a mud run

I arrived super early, 6:15am to volunteer, got my shirt, finally met Meg.  Meg and I had been emailing a bit about volunteering so it was so nice to put a face with a name.  Then I headed off to my first job of the day, gear check.  I have never worked gear check before. It was busy and crazy with all the bags the ladies were dropping off.  I felt like I couldn’t count and kept looking for the numbers to keep everything in order, we were in a tight space but managed to get bags in and out no problem.  I was at gear check for several hours, then I took a short break, ate some food (there were 3 food trucks so I picked one and had a bite) and said hi to a couple people I knew on the production/setup crew.

each participant earned this medal, way better than a t-shirt I think!

Then I went back to Meg to get reassigned, I was sent over to merchandise to work with Jenni, I had a blast.  I was able to sell, sell, sell along with help women pick out the perfect souvenir for the day.  I was able to chat with so many women and made a bunch of them smile big, a lot had just accomplished their very first 5k, to me they are very brave choosing a mud run for their first run, I used to have a hard enough time running 3 miles, let alone 3 miles plus muddy obstacles.  I never got to check out the whole course, guess I should have walked around a bit more, next time I’ll have to go hang out at some of the obstacles and watch a bit more of the race.

New shirt I'll be sporting, thanks for an awesome volunteer gig!

The staff for Pretty Muddy was great, I even stayed to help with tear down, chatted with the staff and said hi to a few of the guys from Evolve Concepts that I knew, wasn’t sure they would remember me, but they did, so it was really nice to see and chat with some of them.  All in all it was another really fun day volunteering, some days I wish I could do stuff like that for my day to day job, but I’m not sure I’d like all the travel, but I know I love the race atmosphere and really feel at home there. It’s fun going from corporate world to mud run/race world, I’ve met so so many awesome people and made some great friends and memories along the way.

Disneyland – Part 3 The Half Marathon

Once again we had to get up super early, the race started at 5:30 and they wanted us in our corrals by 4:45, good thing we only had a short walk over, so Frank and I took our time getting up and out the door, we were old pros since we had done the same routine the day before.  We both got our race gear on, Frank was running the half also, and we were out the door.  It was dark and pretty warm 74 degrees, at 5am, hopefully it wouldn’t get as hot as it did on Saturday.  We wandered over towards the start, took a couple of photos and headed into our corrals, I was in Corral C and Frank was in corral E.  I met some super nice people in my corral, the thing about runners is that almost everyone I meet is nice and friendly and will talk to you all about running.  The two people I met, were also running the Disney Wine and Dine in November, so maybe I’ll see them there.

The race started on time, took about 12-15min from the start before my corral started and then we were off, I love the race atmosphere and this race didn’t disappoint, there were lots and lots of people cheering us on at the start and for the first few miles, just after mile 1 we were headed into the parks, we ran backstage for a bit and just before mile 2 we were in Disney California Adventures, it was still dark out and everything was lit up, it was so so pretty.  We ran past the water and the Ferris wheel which were both lit so pretty, then into my favorite area, Cars Land.  I stopped for a few pictures and loved all the neon and how it looked at night.

After California Adventures we headed into Disneyland for a couple miles, then into the streets of Anaheim, the sun was coming up and it was getting warmer and way more humid.  I ran on, there were several marching bands and pep bands along the way along with lots of cheerleaders, it so awesome to see all of their smiling faces.

Around mile 7 came the classic cars, it was so so cool, there were so so many I should have taken more pictures, I did see one 1969 GTO and got a quick pic and thanked the guy for being out there.

Shortly after all the cars we headed into Angles stadium, it was hot I was beat but I kept running on.  I did do a bit of walk running, my training for this sucked and I just wanted to finish feeling good.

In the stadium, so much fun!

In the stadium, so much fun!

The stadium was awesome, I took a couple of pics as we entered and then I looked to the stands, it was full of 100’s and 100’s of Girl Scouts, all wearing their uniforms and cheering us on, it was so so cool and inspiring.

After the stadium there was only about a 5K left to run, I was beat and tired, but I pushed on doing a little more run/walking… once again I saw Jeff Galloway, he was also run/walking the race at this point, I saw and passed him around mile 11, I was in the home stretch, just a little more to go.  Really wish there had been more crowds the last couple of miles, would have helped me run a bit stronger, the last stretch of the race was great, knowing the finish line was near made me run with all I had, I can’t believe I finished my very first race at Disneyland and couldn’t wait to see everyone after.

YES, I finished!

YES, I finished!

This was not my fastest or my slowest race, but I have to say it was a magical one with so many great memories.

I really enjoyed the Run Disney experience, one of the best parts was going to the parks after the race and seeing everyone wearing their medals around the park.  So many people congratulated us or asked what the medal was for, such a cool experience, I can’t wait for Wine & Dine in Orlando.

All 3 up close

We had some breakfast at Mimi’s again after the race then hit the parks all day.  I took a million pics in the parks and spent as much time as possible in Cars Land.  Maybe I’ll post about that later, next race is just a couple weeks away!

Disneyland – part 2

Disneyland 10k
Saturday morning was the Disneyland 10k, my very first Disney race and I was super excited, it was also my first race in California. The race started at 6:15am which is 8:15 at home, so the early wake up for this race wasn’t bad. We were up super early since neither Frank or I have experienced Run Disney before. Our hotel, the Roadway Inn was only a 1/2 mile from the start line, so a nice easy walk to the start. So we headed out early and met up with some people that frank knew at the race, I had met all of them the night before at dinner.

The race started and I was in coral C, so I didn’t start until close to 6:30 and the sun was just starting to come up. The first 2 miles were outside of the park, I got into a good grove, ran slow and had a lot of fun checking out all of the outfits. I was dressed as Minnie Mouse with a red polka dot running skirt and clip in Minnie ears. Just after mile 2 we were in the parks and headed into cars land. Cars land was my favorite, I was like a little kid, looking at everything and stopping for lots of photos.

10K done!

Most of the 10k was in the parks, we ran backstage at the parks too, even ran through the castle at Magic Kingdom, the end of the race went through Downtown Disney and finished by the Disneyland Hotel. Around mile 4 I got to run near Jeff Galloway, a few people chatted with him, but I just ran near him for a bit.  Joey Fatone was also running, but he was in corral A, so I didn’t see him during the race, Frank did get his picture at the finish, but he missed me.  I finished the race in 1:10 and thats with lots of stops for pictures, so I’m pretty happy.

We hung out for a bit post race before heading back to the hotel, I so so needed a shower.

Breakfast
After showering and getting ready for the parks, we set out to find some food, it was still pretty early in the morning so breakfast was what we needed, we started walking to where we knew a bunch of hotels and restaurants were and stumbled upon Mimi’s Cafe, best Resturant choice of the weekend, the omelet I got was amazing and super fast service. Just what we needed before our adventure into Disneyland and California Adventures.

Best post race breakfast ever!

After an amazing breakfast Frank and I headed over to California Adventures, we were only a couple blocks away, I love that everything is so close and easy to walk to. Made for a nice easy trip.

We started in a bugs life, then my favorite part of both parks, CARS LAND, I could have just sat in Cars Land all day long. Loved it! Plus Cars is one of my favorite Disney/Pixar movies.

A-T Childrens Project
So for this race I was running for a charity, the race sold out so fast it was the only way I could get into the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge, so I ran for A-T Childrens Project, they hosted a pasta dinner Saturday night and the food was amazing.  Frank and I ate till we were stuffed, then off to bed to get ready for the half in the morning.

Disneyland Weekend – part 1

This past weekend was the Disneyland 10K and half marathon, or as it was called this year, the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge!

I took a lot of pictures and had a lot of fun!  This was my first trip to Disneyland and it did not disappoint, so glad I was able to share the experience with my friend and fellow runner Frank, we had 3 very fun filled days in California.

Friday – Expo day!

Disneyland expo

Disneyland expo

More expo pics, it was crazy busy.

More expo pics, it was crazy busy.

Travel day and the expo, we both flew from our respective cities (Milwaukee for me and Chicago for Frank) and met at LAX.  Then traveled out to Anaheim to the race expo at the Disneyland hotel, we got there with no issues, but had heard that the expo was a mess with crazy long lines and waiting for hours to purchase stuff.  I had a plan, I only needed to buy two things, a pair of compression sleeves and a couple of gels for the race, plus get our race goodies.  So away we went, into the expo, they take you downstairs first to get your bib, so in no time we both had our race bibs, then we headed upstairs to the CRAZYNESS!  We got our shirts with no issues, but mine was 10 sixes too big, I ordered a medium, they were unisex sizes and they were HUGE!  I went to the shirt exchange and they had no smalls or extra smalls, oh well I guess I’m stuck.  I wandered the expo, bought my stuff and headed over to merchandise, this is where it got crazy, 2 hour wait to buy and they wouldn’t let us in to look at stuff, so we headed out for food and to get my charity stuff from another hotel.IMG_4295

Eating at Downtown Disney is expensive, so we found a pretzel place and got something small, we  had a group dinner that night, so we didn’t need much.  Then off to the Grand Californian Hotel to pick up my charity stuff, I was running for AT Children’s project so I got a shirt from them, and a pasta dinner on Saturday, with a guest, so Frank and I had dinner Saturday covered!  After picking our stuff up there we realized that we forgot to pick up our park tickets at the expo, so back we went!  Got the tickets, and I was able to exchange my shirts, they had extra small and they fit perfect!  We also waited in line for merchandise, I only got a magnet and a pin, all of the other Dumbo Double Dare stuff was already sold out.  Sucks because I would have got a shirt, but oh well!

Finish Line for all the races!

Athleta opening

Yesterday was the grand opening of the Milwaukee Athleta Store at Bayshore Mall, I had received an email a few weeks ago about a special launch party the night before the store opened for business, I RSVP’d not sure if I would go or not, it was on a Tuesday and depending if I was feeling like driving 45min to the store would be a day of decision.

Invite to the opening!

Athleta is a store that I have been to once in Boulder Colorado, I get their catalogs but I have never bought anything because I like to try stuff on first, so I was really excited for the first Wisconsin store to open.  That decision to go was made way easier when I was at the Kenosha Running Club Picnic talking to some of the other ladies, we ended up planning a carpool to shop and be girly!  Which was a lot of fun, the event was PACKED! And the store was HOT! But we shopped, waited in line forever to try stuff on, then all 5 of us shared the large dressing room and helped each other decide what to buy.  Then we stood in the long line to check out, I did think about not buying anything, but after standing in line so so long, I was committed.

The food, so so good.  They had appetizers from a restaurant in the mall, Devon Seafood and Steak.  I think I ate an entire plate of the shrimp skewers, they were so good!  They were also serving bruschetta, crab spring rolls and key lime pie tarts.  We were in line so long that they kept coming by and we kept eating!
